Philip I (of France) Philip I (of France) (1052-1108), king of France (1060-1108), theeldest son of Henry I, kin g of France. The first six years of hisreign were spent under the regency of his mother and h is uncle.Philip's reign was troubled by many clashes with his powerful vassals, particularly i n Normandy, but he succeeded in enlarging his dominions.Philip was excommunicated in 1095 bec ause he had repudiated his wife,Bertha of Holland, and married Bertrada, the wife of the coun t ofAnjou. Encarta® 98 Desk Encyclopedia © & 1996-97 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. King Philippe I was only seven years old when his father died. Theyear before he had alread y been crowned in the presence of his father, but of course he could not yet rule himself. Cou nt Boudewijn V ofFlanders, the second husband of Philippe's aunt Adélaïde, wasappointed Regen t of France, together with Queen-Mother Anna and theArchbishop of Reims. In 1066, at the stil l tender age of 14, Philipetook over himself. He continued the policy of his predecessors toc onsolidate and increase the King's power over the great local lordsin France. In the first ye ar of his reign, his most powerful vassal,Duke William of Normandy won the battle of Hasting s in 1066 and becameKing of England. Philippe allied himself with the Counts of Anjou, andFla nders who felt threatened by Duke / King William's increased might. In 1092, Philippe rejecte d his first wife Bertha of Holland, andabducted Bertrade van Montfoort whom he married. Thi s of course led tohim being excommunicated by Pope Urbanus II. ------------------------------------ Philip I of France From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Philip I (23 May 1052 ? 29 July 1108), called the enormous[1] or theFat, was King of France f rom 1060 to his death. His reign, like thatof most of the early Direct Capetians, was extraor dinarily long forthe time. The monarchy began a modest recovery from the low it reachedin th e reign of his father and he added to the royal demesne the Vexinand Bourges. Philip was the son of Henry I and Anne of Kiev. His name was of Greekorigin, being derived fr om Philippos, meaning "lover of horses". Itwas rather exotic for Western Europe at the time a nd was bestowed uponhim by his Eastern European mother. Although he was crowned king atthe ag e of seven, until age fourteen (1066) his mother acted asregent, the first queen of France ev er to do so. Her co-regent wasBaldwin V of Flanders. Philip first married Bertha, daughter of Floris I, Count of Holland,in 1072. Although the mar riage produced the necessary heir, Philipfell in love with Bertrade de Montfort, the wife o f Count Fulk IV ofAnjou. He repudiated Bertha (claiming she was too fat) and marriedBertrad e on 15 May 1092. In 1094, he was excommunicated by Hugh,Archbishop of Lyon, for the first ti me; after a long silence, PopeUrban II repeated the excommunication at the Council of Clermon t inNovember 1095. Several times the ban was lifted as Philip promised topart with Bertrade , but he always returned to her, and after 1104, theban was not repeated. In France, the kin g was opposed by Bishop Ivo ofChartres, a famous jurist. Philip appointed Alberic first Constable of France in 1060. A greatpart of his reign, like hi s father's, was spent putting down revoltsby his power-hungry vassals. In 1077, he made peac e with William theConqueror, who gave up attempting the conquest of Brittany. In 1082,Phili p I expanded his demesne with the annexation of the Vexin. Thenin 1100, he took control of Bo urges. It was at the aforementioned Council of Clermont that the FirstCrusade was launched. Philip a t first did not personally support itbecause of his conflict with Urban II. The pope would no t have allowedhim to participate anyway, as he had reaffirmed Philip'sexcommunication at th e said council. Philip's brother Hugh ofVermandois, however, was a major participant. Philip died in the castle of Melun and was buried per request at themonastery of Saint-Benoît -sur-Loire ? and not in St Denis among hisforefathers. He was succeeded by his son, Louis VI , whose successionwas, however, not uncontested. According to Abbot Suger: ? ? King Philip daily grew feebler. For after he had abducted theCountess of Anjou, he coul d achieve nothing worthy of the royaldignity; consumed by desire for the lady he had seized , he gavehimself up entirely to the satisfaction of his passion. So he lostinterest in the af fairs of state and, relaxing too much, took no carefor his body, well-made and handsome thoug h it was. The only thingthat maintained the strength of the state was the fear and love feltf or his son and successor. When he was almost sixty, he ceased to beking, breathing his last b reath at the castle of Melun-sur-Seine, inthe presence of the [future king] Louis... They car ried the body in agreat procession to the noble monastery of St-Benoît-sur-Loire, whereKing P hilip wished to be buried; there are those who say they heardfrom his own mouth that he delib erately chose not to be buried amonghis royal ancestors in the church of St. Denis because h e had nottreated that church as well as they had, and because among so manynoble kings his ow n tomb would not have counted for much. ? Children Philip's children with Bertha were: Constance, married Hugh I of Champagne before 1097 and then, after herdivorce, to Bohemun d I of Antioch in 1106 Louis (1 December 1081 ? 1 August 1137) Henry (b.1083) (died young) Eudes (1087?1096) Philip's children with Bertrade were: Philippe, Comte de Mantes (living 1123) Fleury, seigneur de Nagis (living 1118) Cecile of France, married Tancred, Prince of Galilee; married secondlyPons of Tripoli

Notes:

William Adelin From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia William Adelin (1103 ? November 25, 1120) was the only legitimate sonof Henry I of England an d his wife Maud of Scotland. His maternalgrandparents were Malcolm III of Scotland and Sain t Margaret ofScotland. The second part of William's name is variously referred toas Audelin , Atheling, or Aetheling. In any case it is derived from theOld English Ætheling, meaning "so n of the king". His early death in the White Ship disaster re-arranged the politics ofEngland and France. Wil liam initially survived the wreck, made it intoa life-boat, but perished trying to rescue hi s half-sister. Since hewas but 17 or 18, he had only limited opportunity for personalinfluenc e in the political affairs of his father's domains, principally in two ways. During his long reign Henry would face several eruptions ofhostilities due to the alliances o f rival regions with some of hisneighbors. As part of an effort to bring Anjou, a long-time r ival ofNormandy, into his sphere of allegiance, in 1113 Henry betrothedWilliam to Isabella d' Anjou, eldest daughter of Count Fulk V of Anjou. The marriage finally took place in 1119. Will iam's new wife was onanother ship at the time of the wreck, and survived him to become anun a nd eventually, Abbess of Fontevrault. The King of France was another of the hostile neighbors. A major itemof contention was the os tensible duty for Henry to do homage as Dukeof Normandy. As a king in his own right, Henry wa s loathe to complyand in 1115 he offered to have William do this in his stead. Thisoffer wa s eventually accepted in 1120, after an intervening period ofwar and William did homage to Lo uis VI of France in the middle of1120. For this reason William is sometimes counted as Duke o fNormandy. These roles paled in importance, however, as his death affected eventsin the early 12th centu ry significantly. The impact of White Shipdisaster was that it left Henry with no male heir . William's oldersister Matilda succeeded him as Heir Presumptive, but on Henry's deaththos e barons who had vowed to support her accession to the thronereneged and Stephen, William an d Matilda's cousin, seized the throne. His reign was marked by anarchy ulitimately resolved on ly uponStephen's death. William's mother Queen Matilda usually served as Henry's regent inEngland while he was away i n Normandy. After her death in 1118 Williamwas old enough to serve in her stead. He was close ly advised in thisrole by the king's administrators such as Roger of Salisbury. Duringthe las t year or so of his life he was sometimes referred to as rexdesignatus (king designate). Neve rtheless William had very little realpower.

Henri (1121-1175), bishop of Beauvais (1149-1161) and then ofarchbishop of Reims (1161-1175) Hugues (c. 1123), died young Robert I of Dreux (c. 1123-1188), called Robert the Great, count ofDreux (1137-1184), count o f Perche Constance (c. 1124-1180), married first (in 1140) Eustace IV ofBoulogne, married second (in 1 154) Raymond V of Toulouse Philippe (c. 1125-1161), not to be confused with his elder brother;bishop of Paris Pierre (c. 1125-c. 1182), married Elizabeth of Courtenay Afer Louis VI's death, Adélaide did not immediately retire toconventual life, as did most wid owed queens of the time. Instead shemarried Matthieu I of Montmorency, with whom she had on e child. Sheremained active in the French court and in religious activities. Adélaide is one of two queens in a legend related by William Dugdale. As the story goes, Quee n Adélaide of France became enamoured of ayoung knight, William d'Albini, at a joust. But h e was already engagedto Queen Adeliza of England and refused to become her lover. Thejealou s Adélaide lured him into the clutches of a hungry lion, butWilliam ripped out the beast's to ngue with his bare hands and thuskilled it. This story is almost without a doubt apocryphal. In 1153 she retired to the abbey of Montmartre, which she had foundedwith Louis VII. She die d there on November 18, 1154.

Louis VII Louis VII, called The Young (1121?-80), king of France (1137-80), sonand successor of Louis V I. In the first year of his reign he marriedEleanor of Aquitaine, daughter of William X, duk e of Aquitaine. Louissoon aroused the opposition of Pope Innocent II because of his supporto f a rival to the papal candidate for the archbishopric of Bourges, and his lands were placed u nder papal interdict. Louis next fought a2-year war and conquered Champagne in 1144. In 114 7 he joined theunsuccessful Second Crusade as one of its two chief military leaders(the othe r was Conrad III of Germany). Louis returned to France twoyears later, and in 1152 his marria ge to Eleanor was annulled; in thesame year she married Henry of Anjou, later Henry II, kin g of England.Louis warred with Henry for the possession of Aquitaine but renouncedall right s to the duchy in 1154, the year Henry became king ofEngland. Between 1157 and 1180 Louis con tinued sporadic warfareagainst Henry, who held many of the French provinces. Louis wassucceed ed by his son Philip II (Philip Augustus). All rights reserved. -------------------------------------------------- Louis VII of France From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Louis VII, called the Younger or the Young (French: Louis le Jeune;1120 ? 18 September 1180) , was King of France, the son and successorof Louis VI (hence his nickname). He ruled from 11 37 until his death. He was a member of the House of Capet. His reign was dominated byfeudal st ruggles (in particular with the Angevin family), and saw thebeginning of the long feud betwee n France and England. It also saw thebeginning of construction on Notre-Dame de Paris and th e disastrousSecond Crusade. Early life Louis VII was born in 1120, the second son of Louis VI of France andAdelaide of Maurienne. A s a younger son, Louis VII had been raised tofollow the ecclesiastical path. He unexpectedl y became the heir to thethrone of France after the accidental death of his older brother,Phil ip, in 1131. A well-learned and exceptionally devout man, LouisVII was better suited for lif e as a priest than as a monarch. In his youth, he spent much time in Saint-Denis, where he built afriendship with the Abbot Su ger which was to serve him well in hisearly years as king. Early reign In the same year he was crowned King of France, Louis VII was marriedon 22 July 1137 to Elean or of Aquitaine, heiress of William X ofAquitaine. The pairing of the monkish Louis VII and t he high-spiritedEleanor was doomed to failure; she once reportedly declared that shehad thoug ht to marry a King, only to find she'd married a monk. Theyhad only two daughters, Marie an d Alix. In the first part of Louis VII's reign he was vigorous and jealous ofhis prerogatives, but af ter his Crusade his piety limited his abilityto become an effective statesman. His accessio n was marked by nodisturbances, save the uprisings of the burgesses of Orléans and ofPoitiers , who wished to organize communes. But soon he came intoviolent conflict with Pope Innocent I I. The archbishopric of Bourgesbecame vacant, and the King supported as candidate the chancel lorCadurc, against the Pope's nominee Pierre de la Chatre, swearing uponrelics that so long a s he lived Pierre should never enter Bourges. This brought the interdict upon the King's lands . Louis VII then became involved in a war with Theobald II of Champagne,by permitting Raoul I o f Vermandois, Seneschal of France, to repudiatehis wife, Theobald II's niece, and to marry Pe tronilla of Aquitaine, sister of the queen of France. Champagne also sided with the Pope inth e dispute over Bourges. The war lasted two years (1142?44) and endedwith the occupation of Ch ampagne by the royal army. Louis VII waspersonally involved in the assault and burning of th e town of Vitry.More than a thousand people who had sought refuge in the church diedin the fl ames. Overcome with guilt, and humiliated by ecclesiasticalcontempt, Louis admitted defeat, r emoving his armies from Champagneand returning them to Theobald, accepting Pierre de la Chatr e, andshunning Ralph and Petronilla. Desiring to atone for his sins, he thendeclared on Chris tmas Day 1145 at Bourges his intention of going on acrusade. Bernard of Clairvaux assured it s popularity by his preachingat Vezelay (Easter 1146). Meanwhile in 1144, Geoffrey the Handsome, Count of Anjou, completedhis conquest of Normandy . In exchange for being recognised as Duke ofNormandy by Louis, Geoffrey surrendered half o f the Vexin ? a regionconsidered vital to Norman security ? to Louis. Considered a clevermov e by Louis at the time, it would later prove yet another steptowards Angevin power. In June 1147 Louis VII and his queen, Eleanor, set out from Metz,Lorraine, on the overland ro ute to Syria. Just beyond Laodicea theFrench army was ambushed by Turks. The French were bomb arded by arrowsand heavy stones, the Turks swarmed down from the mountains and themassacre be gan. The historian Odo of Deuil reported: During the fighting the King [Louis] lost his small and famous royalguard, but he remained i n good heart and nimbly and courageouslyscaled the side of the mountain by gripping the tre e roots ? The enemyclimbed after him, hoping to capture him, and the enemy in thedistance con tinued to fire arrows at him. But God willed that hiscuirass should protect him from the arro ws, and to prevent himselffrom being captured he defended the crag with his bloody sword, cutt ing off many heads and hands. Louis VII and his army finally reached the Holy Land in 1148. Hisqueen Eleanor supported he r uncle, Raymond of Antioch, and prevailedupon Louis to help Antioch against Aleppo. But Loui s VII's interestlay in Jerusalem, and so he slipped out of Antioch in secret. Heunited with C onrad III of Germany and King Baldwin III of Jerusalem tolay siege to Damascus; this ended i n disaster and the project wasabandoned. Louis VII decided to leave the Holy Land, despite th eprotests of Eleanor, who still wanted to help her doomed uncle Raymondof Antioch. Louis VI I and the French army returned home in 1149. A shift in the status quo The expedition came to a great cost to the royal treasury andmilitary. It also precipitate d a conflict with Eleanor, leading to theannulment of their marriage at the council of Beauge ncy (March 1152).The pretext of kinship was the basis for annulment; in fact, it owedmore t o the state of hostility between the two, and the decreasingodds that their marriage would pr oduce a male heir to the throne ofFrance. Eleanor subsequently married Henry, Count of Anjou , the futureHenry II of England, in the following May, giving him the duchy ofAquitaine, thre e daughters, and five sons. Louis VII led anineffective war against Henry for having marrie d without theauthorization of his suzerain; the result was a humiliation for theenemies of He nry and Eleanor, who saw their troops routed, their landsravaged, and their property stolen . Louis reacted by coming down witha fever, and returned to the Ile de France. In 1154 Louis VII married Constance of Castile, daughter of AlfonsoVII of Castile. She, too , failed to give him a son and heir, bearingonly two daughters, Margaret and Alys. Louis having produced no sons by 1157, Henry II of England began tobelieve that he might neve r do so, and that consequently thesuccession of France would be left in question. Determine d to secure aclaim for his family, he sent the Chancellor, Thomas Becket, to pressfor a marri age between Princess Marguerite and Henry's heir, alsocalled Henry. Louis, surprisingly, agre ed to this proposal, and by theTreaty of Gisors (1158) betrothed the young pair, giving a s a dowrythe Norman Vexin and Gisors. Constance died in childbirth on 4 October 1160, and five weeks laterLouis VII married Adela o f Champagne. Henry II, to counterbalance theadvantage this would give the King of France, ha d the marriage oftheir children (Henry "the Young King" and Marguerite) celebrated atonce. Lo uis understood the danger of the growing Angevin power;however, through indecision and lack o f fiscal and military resourcescompared to Henry II's, he failed to oppose Angevin hegemonyef fectively. One of his few successes, in 1159, was his trip toToulouse to aid Raymond V, the C ount of the city who had been attackedby Henry II: after he entered into the city with a smal l escort, claiming to be visiting the Countess his sister, Henry declared thathe could not att ack the city whilst his liege lord was inside, andwent home. Diplomacy At the same time the emperor Frederick I (1152?1190) in the east wasmaking good the imperia l claims on Arles. When the schism broke out,Louis VII took the part of the Pope Alexander II I, the enemy ofFrederick I, and after two comical failures of Frederick I to meetLouis VII a t Saint Jean de Losne (on 29 August and 22 September 1162),Louis VII definitely gave himsel f up to the cause of Alexander III,who lived at Sens from 1163 to 1165. Alexander III gave th e King, inreturn for his loyal support, the golden rose. More importantly for French ? and English ? history would be hissupport for Thomas Becket, Ar chbishop of Canterbury, whom he tried toreconcile with Henry II. Louis sided with Becket as m uch to damageHenry as out of piousness ? yet even he grew irritated with thestubbornness of t he archbishop, asking when Becket refused Henry'sconciliations, "Do you wish to be more tha n a Saint?" He also supported Henry's rebellious sons, and encouraged Plantagenetdisunity by making Henry 's sons, rather than Henry himself, the feudaloverlords of the Angevin territories in France ; but the rivalryamongst Henry's sons and Louis's own indecisiveness broke up thecoalition (1 173?1174) between them. Finally, in 1177, the Popeintervened to bring the two Kings to term s at Vitry. Finally, nearing the end of his life, Louis' third wife bore him a sonand heir, Philip II Aug ustus. Louis had him crowned at Reims in 1179,in the Capetian tradition (Philip would in fac t be the last King socrowned). Already stricken with paralysis, King Louis VII himself wasno t able to be present at the ceremony. He died on September 18, 1180at the Abbey at Saint-Pont , Allier and is interred in Saint DenisBasilica. Marriages and Children Louis married three times. By Eleanor of Aquitaine, he had: Marie, married Henry I of Champagne Alix, married Theobald V of Blois By Constance of Castile: Marguerite of France (1158?97), married (1) Henry the Young King; (2)King Béla III of Hungar y (1172?96) Alys (4 October 1160 ? c. 1220), engaged to Richard I of England; shemarried William III Talv as, Count of Ponthieu By Adele of Champagne: Philip II Augustus (August 22, 1165 ? 1223) Agnes of France (1171?1240), who was betrothed to Alexius II Comnenus(1180?83) but married (1 ) Andronicus I Comnenus (1183?85); (2)Theodore Branas (1204)
