Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com BD GABRIEL Man of God The name of an angel sent to Daniel (Dan. 8: 16; Dan. 9: 21): to Zacharias (Luke 1: 11-19); a nd to Mary (Luke 1: 26-38). He is identified by latter-day revelation as Noah (HC 3: 386). BD ELIAS There are several uses of this word in the scriptures. (3) The title Elias has also been applied to many others for specific missions or restorativ e functions that they are to fulfill, for example, John the Revelator (D&C 77: 14); and Noa h or Gabriel (D&C 27: 6-7, cf. Luke 1: 11-20). ANGELS IN THE TALMUD MICHAEL, GABRIEL, URIEL, RAPHAEL: FOUR ANGELS OF THE PRESENCE At the head of the angelogical system described in rabbinic literature are four archangels, c orresponding to the four divisions of the army of Israel as described in Numbers 2: "As the H oly One blessed be He created four winds (directions) and four banners (for Israel's army), s o also did He make four angels to surround His Throne - Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael . Michael is on its right, …Gabriel in front, corresponding to the tribe of Judah as well a s Moses and Aaron who were in the east; …"[1] To my right Michael and to my left Gabriel, in front of me Uriel and behind me Raphael, and o ver my head God's Shekhinah ["the presence of God"]." -From the Kriat Shma, prayer recited before the Shma when going to sleep We find no mention of angels' names until we reach the Book of Daniel, where Michael and Gabr iel make their appearance.[2] …Michael and Gabriel are the most prominent of the angels, an d are often mentioned together as the anonymous divine messengers cooperating in a task in th e Bible narrative. Michael and Gabriel visited Abraham after his circumcision, Michael's tas k being to announce the future birth of Isaac while Gabriel's was to destroy Sodom.[4] Togeth er they recorded the birthright was sold to Jacob by Esau;[5] accompanied God when He came do wn on Mount Sinai;[6] refused to take Moses' soul when his time came to die;[7] and then stoo d at either side of his' bier after his death.[8] Michael is made up entirely of snow and Gabriel of fire, and though they stand near one anoth er they do not injure one another, thus indicating the power of God to "make peace in His hig h places."[9] According to the Aggadah, Both Michael and Gabriel will be among those who wil l accompany the Messiah, and they will then contend with the wicked.[10] Michael is considered superior to Gabriel in rank[11] … Although both Michael and Gabriel make their appearance in the Kabbalah, Michael is given gre ater importance. … Gabriel is God's messenger on numerous missions and the constant defender of the Jewish peopl e. He saves Tamar from the fate of being burnt as punishment for her unchastity;[21] protect s Joseph against the evil designs of Potiphar,[22] and teaches him the seventy languages of t he world;[23] causes the infant Moses to weep so that Pharaoah's daughter will feel compassio nate towards him;[24] and saves Moses' life when Pharaoh sets him to a test of loyalty (whe n the king sets before him coals of fire and jewels, the angel Gabriel pushes his hand to tou ch the coals, lest his reaching for the crown suggest his wish to usurp Pharaoh's place).[25 ] Gabriel delivers Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah from the fiery furnace.[26] [1] Numbers Rabbah 2:10 [2] 10:13, 21; 12:1 and Daniel 8:16; 9:21 [3] JT, RH 1:2, 56d [4] Gen. As was record ed in the Gospel of Luke. Gabriel also prophesied the conception of St. John the Baptist by M ary's kinswoman Elizabeth. APOCALYPSE, ANGEL OF THE-The title given to a number of angels. The angel of the apocalypse i s looked upon as an angel who brings tidings of the impending end of the world and imminent j udgment of the human race. Among the angels who are suggested in this role are Michael, Gabri el, Orifiel, Raphael, and Haniel. (http://heavensangel.net/a.htm) GABRIEL-An archangel whose name means "God is my strength" and who is the one of the most bel oved of all members of the heavenly host. Gabriel is also one of the highest ranked of all an gels and is only one of two (or three) actually named angels in the entire Bible, with Michae l and Raphael. Among the Jews, Gabriel's power and strength-as implied by his very name-wer e frequently noted in legends and tales. He has been called the angel of the power of God an d also the angel of judgment and has been equated with thunder and majesty. In the role of ju dgment angel he will supposedly appear on the last day and blow the final trumpet that will c all all of the living and the dead to come forth and face the final, irrevocable judgment o f the Lord. Known in the Arabic as Jibril, Gabriel has a prominent role in Islamic teachings , for he believed to have dictated the entire Qur'an, surah by surah, to Muhammad and is call ed the angel of truth and the chief of the four favored angels. (http://heavensangel.net/g.htm) LIGHT, ANGEL OF-The title borne by several angels over the centuries and in assorted religiou s traditions. In Judaism and Jewish legend Isaac is called the angel of light because of th e unusual, supernatural light that seemed to emanate from him at the time of his birth. Jesu s has been called by some an angel of light, but in Christian traditions Gabriel is the ackno wledged and current holder of the title. A different claimant to the position is Satan, who c an be termed an angel of light. Still other variations on the title have been borne by such a ngels as Uriel and Raphael And one other angel, Shamshiel, a powerful prince and guardian, wh ose name translate as "light of day." (http://heavensangel.net/l.htm) Gabriel Contents 1 Gabriel in Judaism 1.1 Gabriel in Jewish history and the Hebrew Bible 1.2 Gabriel in the Talmud 2 Gabriel in Christianity 2.1 Gabriel in the canonical New Testament 2.2 Gabriel in other Christian denominations 3 Gabriel in Islam 4 Gabriel in Angelology and the Occult In various religions, Gabriel (גַּבְרִיאֵל, Standard Hebrew Gavriʼel, Latin Gabrielus, Tiberi an Hebrew Gaḇrîʼēl, Arabic جبريل Ǧabrīl Jibril) is an angel who serves as a messenger from Go d. He appears first in the Book of Daniel in the Hebrew Bible. The name Gabriel can mean "ma n of God", "hero of God", or "God has shown himself mighty." He was also referred to as the " Left Hand of God". According to the Abrahamic religions, Gabriel is an archangel who serves as a messenger fro m God. He is sometimes regarded as the angel of death, the prince of fire and thunder, but mo re frequently as one of God's chief messengers, and traditionally said to be the only angel t hat can speak Syriac and Chaldee. In the Catholic Tradition, he is known as one of the archan gels. Gabriel is most frequently confused with Michael, the angel who holds a sword and guard s the gates of Eden (later Heaven) against Adam, Eve, and their descendants. In Islam, he i s called the chief of the four favoured angels, and the spirit of truth. Gabriel also finds m ention in the writings of the Bahá'í Faith, most notably in Bahá'u'lláh's metaphysical work T he Seven Valleys and the Four Valleys. Gabriel in Judaism Gabriel in Jewish history and the Hebrew Bible In the historical context of the destruction of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, and the subseq uent Babylonian captivity of the Jewish Kingdom of Judah that followed, the important Jewis h leader Daniel ponders the meanings of several visions he has experienced in exile, when Gab riel appears to him (Daniel 8:16-25). Gabriel is mentioned twice by name: "...And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, that I sought to underst and it; and, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. And I heard the voic e of a man between the banks of Ulai, who called, and said:' Gabriel, make this man to unders tand the vision.' So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was terrified, and fel l upon my face; but he said to me: 'Understand, son of man; for the vision belongs to the tim e of the end..." [1] (Daniel 8:15-17). It is towards the end of the rule of Babylonia yet Gabriel is sent to elaborate and explain m atters also relating to the "End of Days" (See Jewish eschatology) such as when the kingdom s of Persia, Greece and Rome will tumble from dominating the world. "...And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Isr ael, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God; a nd while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the begi nning, being caused to fly swiftly, approached close to me about the time of the evening offe ring. And he made me understand, and talked with me, and said: 'Daniel, I have now come to ma ke you skilful of understanding...Seventy weeks are decreed upon your people and upon your ho ly city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sin, and to forgive iniquity, an d to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal vision and prophet, and to anoint the mo st holy place" [2] (Daniel 9:20-24). Here is where Gabriel tells Daniel about the mysterious "Seventy weeks" (shavu-im shivim) tha t seem to indicate the end of the Babylonian captivity which lasted seventy years when Cyru s the Great allowed the return to Zion and the rebuilding of the Temple by the Jews in his em pire. His name also occurs in the apocryphal Book of Enoch. Gabriel in the Talmud In the Talmud, Gabriel appears as the destroyer of the hosts of Sennacherib in Sanhedrin 95 b "with a sharpened scythe which had been ready since Creation." The Archangel is also attrib uted as the one who showed Joseph the way, the one who prevented Queen Vashti from appearin g naked before King Ahasverus and his guests, and as one of the angels who buried Moses. In T almud Yoma 79a, however, it is stated that Gabriel once fell into disgrace "for not obeyin g a command exactly as given, and remained for a while outside the heavenly Curtain." Durin g this 21 day period, the guardian angel of Persia, Dobiel, acted as Gabriel's proxy. Gabriel is also, according to Jewish mythology, the voice that told Noah to gather the animal s before the great flood; the invisible force that prevented Abraham from slaying Isaac; th e invisible force that wrestled with Jacob; and the voice of the burning bush. Gabriel in Christianity Gabriel in the canonical New Testament Gabriel delivering the Annunciation. Painting by El Greco (1575)In the New Testament, Gabrie l is the angel who reveals to Zacharias that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth and w ho visits Mary to reveal that she will give birth to Jesus. According to later legend, he i s the unidentified angel in the Book of Revelation (formerly known as the Apocalypse of John ) who blows the horn announcing the Judgment Day. To Catholics, he is St. Gabriel the Archang el, the patron saint of communications workers. With Michael and Raphael, his feast day is Se ptember 29. Gabriel's visit to Mary in the Gospel of Luke is often called "The Annunciation," (Luke 1:2 6 et al.), an event that is celebrated on March 25. It is also commemorated as the "First Joy ful Mystery" each time the rosary is prayed. Gabriel in other Christian denominations In Latter-day Saint theology, Gabriel lived a mortal life as the patriarch Noah. Gabriel an d Noah are regarded as the same person, but Gabriel alone is regarded as the immortal resurre cted being (angel). As such, all of Noah's children are considered to be Gabriel's earthly ch ildren. Gabriel in Islam Jibril, Jibrīl, Jibreel, Jabril or Djibril (Arabic جبرئيل,جبرﺍئيل,or جبريل, IPA [dʒibræːʔiːl] , [dʒibrɛ̈ʔiːl], or [dʒibriːl]) is Arabic for Gabriel, an archangel in Jewish and Christian a ngelology. In Islam, Gabriel is the angel who revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, sura by sura , and thus Gabriel is considered the most prominent angel, as well as the spirit of truth. As recorded in the hadith, (004:54:455 Sahih Bukhari). Narrated By Abu Ishaq-Ash-Shaibani: I asked Zir bin Hubaish regarding the Statement of Allah: "And was at a distance Of but two b ow-lengths Or (even) nearer; So did (Allah) convey The Inspiration to His slave (Gabriel) an d then he (Gabriel) Conveyed (that to Muhammad). (53.9-10) On that, Zir said, "Ibn Mas'ud inf ormed us that the Prophet had seen Gabriel having 600 wings." According to Muslim beliefs, the angel's primary task was to bring messages from God to the m essengers, and the other tasks include accompanying the angel Azrael ("Angel of Death") to ta ke the soul of a person who dies with ablution. Gabriel is also said to be the angel that inf ormed Mariam (Mary) of how she would conceive Isa (Jesus): She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our Ruh [angel Jibrae l (Gabriel)], and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects. She said: "Ver ily

I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent (Allâh) from you, if you do fear Allâh." (The ang el) said: "I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteou s son." She said: "How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?" He s aid: "So (it will be), your Lord said: 'That is easy for Me (Allâh): And (We wish) to appoin t him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (Allâh), and it is a matter (already) decreed , (by Allâh).' " (Quran, 19:17-21) In Islam, Gabriel accompanied Muhammad in his ascension to the heavens [3], where he (Muhamma d) met with previous messengers of God, and was informed about the Islamic prayer. This ascen sion is termed as Mai'raj. Muslims also believe that this angel descends to Earth on the night of Lailat-ul-Qadr ("The N ight of Power"), a night in the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan in the Islamic cal endar. Gabriel in Angelology and the Occult Gabriel is sometimes associated with the color Blue, the direction West, or the element Water ; his horse is named Haizum. Gabriel is also variously identified as the angel of annunciatio n, resurrection, mercy, vengeance, death, and revelation. Furthermore, the Archangel has als o been identified in various sources to be one of the 7 Archangels who stand in the presenc e of God; he is also claimed variously be a tafsarim (chief angelic prince) of the Cherub, Vi rtue, Power, Archangel, and Angel celestial orders. The governor of the Moon and Monday als o are ascribed to Gabriel; finally, the Archangel is also the ruler of Shamayim, the First He aven. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel) Angel Societal Structure The ranking of the angelic choirs vary depending upon the religious views and theories. Ther e appear to be some discrepancies between which angels belong to which choir. Below are a lis t of commonly seen member and positions that may be found listed differently depending on th e religion or theories that they refer to. The Hebrews believed that there existed seven heavens, guarded by various angelic beings. plac: CHAPTER XXXII4. p. 69|OF THE DEATH OF THE PROPHETS; HOW THEY DlED, AND (WHERE) EACH ONE OF THEM WAS BURIED5.||The Jews stoned Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah in Egypt, because he rebuked them for worshipp|ing idols; and the Egyptians buried him by the side of Pharaoh's palace. The Egyptians love|d him much, because he prayed and the beasts died which used to come up from the river Nile a|nd devour men. These beasts were called 'crocodiles.' When Alexander the son of Philip, the M|acedonian, came (to Egypt), he made enquiries about his grave, and took and brought him to Al|exandria. This (prophet) during his life said to the Egyptians, 'a child shall be born--tha|t is the Messiah--of a virgin, and He shall be laid in a crib2, and He will shake and cast do|wn the idols.' From that time, and until Christ was born, the Egyptians used to set a virgi|n and a baby in a crib, and to worship him, because of what Jeremiah said to them, that He sh|ould be born in a crib.||2 See Migne, Patrologiae Cursus, Ser. Gr., t. 43, col. 421; and the chapter on the going dow|n of our Lord into Egypt.|(http://www.sacred-texts.com/chr/bb/bb32.htm)

See ABSTINENCE, TOTAL. S ee NAZARITES Rechabites - The descendants of Rechab through Jonadab or Jehonadab. They belonged to the Kenites, who acc ompanied the children of Israel into Palestine, and dwelt among them. Moses married a Kenit e wife (Judges 1:16), and Jael was the wife of "Heber the Kenite" (4:17). Saul also showed ki ndness to the Kenites (1 Samuel 15:6). The main body of the Kenites dwelt in cities, and adop ted settled habits of life (30:29); but Jehonadab forbade his descendants to drink wine or t o live in cities. They were commanded to lead always a nomad life. They adhered to the law la id down by Jonadab, and were noted for their fidelity to the old-established custom of thei r family in the days of Jeremiah (35); and this feature of their character is referred to b y the prophet for the purpose of giving point to his own exhortation. They are referred to i n Nehemiah 3:14 and 1 Chronicles 2:55. Dr. Wolff (1839) found in Arabia, near Mecca, a trib e claiming to be descendants of Jehonadab; and recently a Bedouin tribe has been found near t he Dead Sea who also profess to be descendants of the same Kenite chief.

Governor appointed by Nebucbadnezzar after carrying the Jews into captivity -- 2 Kings 25: 22-24 Jeremiah committed to the care of -- Jeremiah 39:14; 40:5,6 Warned of the conspiracy of Ishmael by Johanan, and the Captains of his army -- Jeremiah 40:1 3-16 Killed by Ishmael -- 2 Kings 25:25,26; Jeremiah 41:1-10 GEDALIAH Made great by Jehovah. 4. The son of Ahikam, and grandson of Shaphan, secretary of king Josiah (Jeremiah 26:24). Aft er the destruction of Jerusalem (see ZEDEKIAH), Nebuchadnezzar left him to govern the countr y as tributary to him (2 Kings 25:22; Jeremiah 40:5; 52:16). Ishmael, however, at the head o f a party of the royal family, "Jewish irreconcilables", rose against him, and slew him and " all the Jews that were with him" (Jeremiah 41:2,3) at Mizpah about three months after the des truction of Jerusalem. He and his band also plundered the town of Mizpah, and carried off man y captives. He was, however, overtaken by Johanan and routed. He fled with such of his follow ers as escaped to the Ammonites (41:15). The little remnant of the Jews now fled to Egypt. GEDALIAH (God is my greatness ), son of Ahikam (Jeremiah’s protector, (Jeremiah 26:24) and grandson o f Shaphan the secretary of King Josiah. After the destruction of the temple, B.C. 588, Nebuch adnezzar departed from Judea, leaving GEDALIAH with a Chaldean guard, (Jeremiah 40:5) at Mizp ah to govern the vinedressers and husbandmen, (Jeremiah 52:16) who were exempted from captivi ty. Jeremiah jointed GEDALIAH; and Mizpah became the resort of Jews from various quarters. (J eremiah 40:6,11) He was murdered by Ishmael two months after his appointment. GEDALIAH = "Jehovah is great" (ghed-al-yaw') 2. son of Ahikam, the governor of Judea appointed by Nebuchadnezzar GEDALIAH ged-a-li'-a (gedhalyah; except in 1 Chronicles 25:3,9 and Jeremiah 38:1, where it is gedhalya hu, "Yah(u) is great"): (1) GEDALIAH, the son of Ahikam (the friend and protector of Jeremiah) and grandson of Shapha n (the scribe in the reign of Josiah) (2 Kings 25:22-25; Jeremiah 39:14; 40:5-16; 41:1-18). 1. His Appointment as Governor in Judah: After the destruction of Jerusalem and the carrying away captive of the Jews to Babylon (58 6 BC), GEDALIAH was appointed by Nebuchadnezzar governor over the poor Jews who had been lef t in the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen (2 Kings 25:12,22). To his charge were commit ted also some royal princesses (Jeremiah 43:6) and courtiers (Jeremiah 41:16) who had been al lowed to remain as unlikely to cause any trouble. GEDALIAH fixed his residence at Mizpah, a f ew miles Northwest of Jerusalem. Here he was joined by Jeremiah (40:6). 2. His Conciliatory Spirit and Wise Rule: The Jewish soldiers who had escaped capture, having heard that the Chaldeans had departed, an d that GEDALIAH, one of their own nation, had been appointed governor in Judah, came with Ish mael, Johanan and other officers at their head, to GEDALIAH at Mizpah (2 Kings 25:23,14; Jere miah 40:7-10). The governor assured them that they need have no fear of vengeance from thei r conquerors, and promised them on oath protection and security, if they would remain and cul tivate the land and become the peaceful subjects of the king of Babylon. This assurance led t o a general gathering around GEDALIAH of refugees from all the neighboring countries (Jeremia h 40:11,12). For two months (some think longer) GEDALIAH's beneficent and wise rule did muc h to consolidate affairs in Judah and to inspire the feeble remnant of his countrymen with he art and hope. 3. His Treacherous Assassination: But evil spirits were at work against him. Baalis, king of Ammon, had determined upon his lif e (Jeremiah 40:13-16). The peaceful and popular rule which was being established by the goo d governor stood in the way of the accomplishment of any plan of conquest he entertained. Baa lis found a ready instrument for his murderous design in Ishmael who, as one of royal birth a nd in the counsels of the king (Jeremiah 41:1), was doubtless jealous of the man who had bee n chosen governor in preference to himself. GEDALIAH was informed by Johanan and the other ca ptains of the plot to assassinate him, and Johanan at a private interview expressed to hi m a strong desire to go himself and slay Ishmael secretly, declaring that the safety of the J ews depended upon the life of the governor. But GEDALIAH refused to allow Johanan to anticipa te his enemy, believing, in the generosity of his heart, that Ishmael was not capable of suc h an act of treachery. He soon found, however, that his confidence had been sadly misplaced . Ishmael, with ten of his companions, came on a visit to him to Mizpah, and after they had b een hospitably entertained they fell upon their good host and murdered him, along with all th e Jewish and the Chaldean soldiers whom he had with him for order and protection (2 Kings 25: 25; Jeremiah 41:1-3). They then cast the bodies of their victims into the cistern which Asa h ad made (Jeremiah 41:9). Ishmael was pursued and overtaken by Johanan, but he succeeded in ef fecting his escape to the Ammonites (Jeremiah 41:11-15). Then Johanan and the other captains , afraid lest the Chaldeans should avenge upon them the murder of the governor (Jeremiah 41:1 6-18), and against the earnest entreaties of Jeremiah (chapter 42), fled to Egypt, taking th e prophet and the Jewish remnant with them (43:5-7). In memory of the date of GEDALIAH's assa ssination the Jews kept a fast (which is still retained in the Jewish calendar) on the 3rd da y of the 7th month, Tishri (Zechariah 7:5; 8:19). 4. His Noble Character: The narratives reveal GEDALIAH in a very attractive light, as one who possessed the confidenc e alike of his own people and their conquerors; a man of rare wisdom and tact, and of upright , transparent character, whose kindly nature and generous disposition would not allow him t o think evil of a brother; a man altogether worthy of the esteem in which he was held by succ eeding generations of his fellow-countrymen. Post-Zedekiah/Gedaliah Nebuchadnezzar made Gedaliah, an Israelite of non-royal blood, governor over Judah. However , a few months later Ishmael, who was of royal blood, assassinated him. (Jeremiah 42:13-18). (http://www.wls.wels.net/Publications/Theologia/vol2no1/ToppeJeremiah/ToppeJeremiah.htm) Who was Gedalia? Q: I would like more information about the Jewish man, Gedalia, who was appointed governor o f Judea by Nebuchadnezzar and assassinated by fellow Jews causing the Babylonian exile. A: Gedalyia ben Achikom (son of Achikom) was indeed appointed governor by Nevuchadnezar and l eft in charge of the Land of Israel after Nevuchadnezar destroyed the Temple and took most o f the Jews away to Babylon. Although there were not many Jews left in Israel after the Churba n, when other Jews who had previously fled to the lands of Moav, Amon and Edom heard that a n infrastructure was left in place with Gedalya in charge, they all returned to Israel and be gan settling and working the land anew. As the situation began to improve, the king of Amon , who was jealous of Gedalya's popularity and success, and of the Jews' survival, began plott ing their downfall. To this end, he hired one Yishmael the son of Nesanya to kill Gedalya. Yi shmael arranged to meet Gedalya in Mitzpeh. Although he had been warned about Yishmael's alle ged intentions, Gedalya refused to believe these rumors because believing them was prohibite d as Leshon HoRa. Yishmael and his men were able to get close to Gedalya and they killed him , together with others who were with him, and even some natives of the land of Kasdim that Ne vuchadnezar had sent to help/observe Gedalya. The surviving Jews were afraid that Nevuchadnez ar would blame them for allowing this tragedy to occur, so they fled to Egypt, leaving the la nd of Israel behind, desolate. This occurred on the third day of Tishrei. Some say he was kil led on Rosh HaShanah but since we may not fast on Yom Tov, the fast day is held on the third.
