Source: Online Wiokipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pharaohs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artaxerxes_I . Ruled 0464 - 0424 BC Artaxerxes I (är´´tzûrk´sz) (KEY) , d. 425 B.C., king of ancient Persia (464-425 B.C.), of the dynasty o f the Achaemenis. Artaxerxes is the Greek form of “Ardashir the Persian.” He succeeded his fa ther, Xerxes I, in whose assassination he had no part. The later weakness of the Persian Empi re is commonly traced to the reign of Artaxerxes, and there were many uprisings in the provin ces. The revolt of Egypt, aided by the Athenians, was put down (c.455 B.C.) after years of fi ghting, and Bactria was pacified. The Athenians sent a fleet under Cimon to aid a rebellion o f Cyprus against Persian rule. The fleet won a victory, but the treaty negotiated by Callia s was generally favorable to Persia. Important cultural exchanges occurred between Greece an d Persia during Artaxerxes’ reign. He was remembered warmly in the books of Ezra and Nehemia h because he authorized their revival of Judaism. BD ARTAXERXES Longimanus. Son of Xerxes and king of Persia, 465-425 B.C.; hinders Jews from building (Ezr a 4: 7-23) [actually, see False Smerdis]; gives commission to Ezra (Ezra 6: 14; Ezra 7: 1-21 ; Ezra 8: 1), and to Nehemiah (Neh. 2: 1; Neh. 5: 14; Neh. 13: 6). Artaxerxes I of Persia From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Artaxerxes I was king of the Persian Empire from 464 BC to 424 BC. He belonged to the Achaeme nid dynasty and was the successor of Xerxes I. He is mentioned in two books of the Bible, Ezr a and Nehemiah. He allowed the Jews to rebuild Jerusalem. He was followed on the throne by hi s son Xerxes II. The name as given is the Greek form; the Persian form is Artakhshathra. He was later called A rdeshir. After Persia had been defeated at Eurymedon, military action between Greece and Persia had co me to a standstill. When Artaxerxes I took power, he began a new tradition of drawing off th e Athenians by funding their enemies in Greece. This indirectly caused the Athenians to mov e the treasury of the Delian League from the island of Delos to the Athenian acropolis. Thi s funding practice inevitably prompted renewed fighting in 450 BC, where the Greeks attacke d at the Battle of Cyprus. After Cimon's failure to attain much in this expedition, "The Peac e of Callias" was agreed between Athens, Argos and Persia in 449. King of Persia. Decree of, in behalf of the Jews Ezra 7; Nehemiah 2; 5:14 ARTAXERXES Great king, the name or title of several kings of Persia. 2. The king of this name mentioned in Ezra 7:1-28, is most probably Artaxerxes Longimanus, th e son and successor of Xerxes, who ascended the throne B. C. 425, after a mild reign of thirt y-nine years. In the seventh year of his reign, Ezra led a second company of the Jewish exile s back to Jerusalem. In the twentieth year of Artaxerxes Longimanus, Nehemiah was sent to Jer usalem as governor, Nehemiah 2:1; 5:14. Artaxerxes - The Greek form of the name of several Persian kings. 2. The king mentioned in Ezra 7:1, in the seventh year (B.C. 458) of whose reign Ezra led a s econd colony of Jews back to Jerusalem, was probably Longimanus, who reigned for forty year s (B.C. 464-425); the grandson of Darius, who, fourteen years later, permitted Nehemiah to re turn and rebuild Jerusalem. Artaxerxes - From arta, "great," or "honored"; Artaioi, Arii, Sansk. Arya, being the old name of the Persi ans, and kshershe, "a king" = Xerxes = Ahasuerus. (See AHASUERUS.) 2. Artaxerxes II was Artaxerxes Longimanus, son of Xerxes, who reigned 464-425 B.C. He allowe d Nehemiah (Nehemiah 2:1) to spend 12 years at Jerusalem to settle the affairs of the returne d Jews. He had 13 years previously permitted Ezra (Ezra 7:1) to go on a similar errand. So in 444 B.C. Artaxerxes Longimanus, who was noted among the Persian kings for wisdom and ri ght feeling, sanctioned Nehemiah's going as civil governor. Like Cyrus and Darius he identifi ed Jehovah with his own supreme god, Ormuzd (Ezra 7:12; Ezra 7:21-23), supported the Jewish w orship by offerings and grants from the state and provincial treasuries, and threatened death , banishment, imprisonment, or confiscation against opponents. The oriental despot, who at pe rsonal inconvenience would suffer his servant's departure for so long, to cheer him up, mus t have been more than ordinarily good natured. Secular history so represents him, "the firs t of Persian monarchs for mildness and magnanimity." The Persians, says Diodorus Siculus (11: 71:2), admired his "equity and moderation in government." ARTAXERXES (ahr tuh xuhr' xeess) Persian royal name meaning, “kingdom of righteousness,” belonging to fo ur Persian rulers and forming a major piece of evidence in dating Ezra and Nehemiah. See Ezra ; Nehemiah. 1. Son of Xerxes I, Artaxerxes I ruled Persia from 465 to 424 B.C. He was called Longimanus o r “long-handed.” Most scholars place Ezra's trip to Jerusalem in the seventh year of his reig n or 458 B.C. (Ezra 7:7). He had already received complaints from the inhabitants of Palestin e who wanted to stop the returned exiles from rebuilding and had stopped the Jewish builder s (Ezra 4:7-24). [In fact, see False Smerdis] The Temple had been completed under Darius II ( 522-486) and thus before Artaxerxes (Ezra 6:15). Artaxerxes supported Ezra's work (Ezra 7:6-2 6). Nehemiah served as cupbearer to Artaxerxes (Nehemiah 2:1), and the king proved sensitiv e to Nehemiah's mood (Nehemiah 2:2). He granted Nehemiah's request to go to Judah (Nehemiah 2 :5-6), making him governor of Judah (Nehemiah 5:14). Artaxerx’es (the great warrior ). 2. In (Nehemiah 2:1) we have another Artaxerxes. We may safely identify him with Artaxerxe s Macrocheir or Longimanus, the son of Xerxces, who reigned B.C. 464-425. Artaxerxes = "I will make the spoiled to boil: I will stir myself (in) winter" 1. son and successor of Xerxes as emperor of Persia, 465-424 BC ARTAXERXES - ar-taks-urk'-sez (Artaxerxes): Is the Greek and Latin form of one, and perhaps of two or three kings of Persia mentioned i n the Old Testament. (1) All are agreed that the Artaxerxes at whose court Ezra and Nehemiah were officials is Ar taxerxes I, the son of Xerxes, commonly called Longimanus, who reigned from 465 to 424 BC. Th is Artaxerxes was the third son of Xerxes and was raised to the throne by Artabanus, the murd erer of Xerxes. Shortly after his accession, Artaxerxes put his older brother Darius to death ; and a little later, Artabanus, who perhaps aimed to make himself king, was killed. Hystaspe s, the second brother, who seems to have been satrap of Bactria at the time of his father's d eath, rebelled, and after two battles was deprived of his power and probably of his life. Th e reign of Artaxerxes was further disturbed by the revolt of Egypt in 460 BC, and by that o f Syria about 448 BC. The Egyptians were assisted by the Athenians, and their rebellion, led by Inarus and Amyrtaeu s, was suppressed only after five years of strenuous exertions on the part of the Persians un der the command of the great general Megabyzus. After the re-conquest of Egypt, Artaxerxes, f earing that the Athenians would make a permanent subjugation of Cyprus, concluded with them t he peace of Callias, by which he retained the island of Cyprus; but agreed to grant freedom t o all Greek cities of Asia Minor. Shortly after this Megabyzus led a revolt in Syria and comp elled his sovereign to make peace with him on his own terms, and afterward lived and died i n high favor with his humiliated king. Zopyrus, the son of Megabyzus at a later time, while s atrap of Lycia and Caria, led a rebellion in which he was assisted by the Greeks. It is thoug ht by some that the destruction of Jerusalem which is lamented by Nehemiah occurred during th e rebellion of Syria under Megabyzus. Artaxerxes I died in 424 BC, and was succeeded by his s on Xerxes II, and later by two other sons, Sogdianus and Ochus, the last of whom assumed th e regnal name of Darius, whom the Greeks surnamed Nothus.

plac: CHAPTER XXXII4. p. 69|OF THE DEATH OF THE PROPHETS; HOW THEY DlED, AND (WHERE) EACH ONE OF THEM WAS BURIED5.||The Jews stoned Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah in Egypt, because he rebuked them for worshipp|ing idols; and the Egyptians buried him by the side of Pharaoh's palace. The Egyptians love|d him much, because he prayed and the beasts died which used to come up from the river Nile a|nd devour men. These beasts were called 'crocodiles.' When Alexander the son of Philip, the M|acedonian, came (to Egypt), he made enquiries about his grave, and took and brought him to Al|exandria. This (prophet) during his life said to the Egyptians, 'a child shall be born--tha|t is the Messiah--of a virgin, and He shall be laid in a crib2, and He will shake and cast do|wn the idols.' From that time, and until Christ was born, the Egyptians used to set a virgi|n and a baby in a crib, and to worship him, because of what Jeremiah said to them, that He sh|ould be born in a crib.||2 See Migne, Patrologiae Cursus, Ser. plac: CHAPTER XXXII4. Entries: 15913 Updated: 2008-10-06 16:47:14 UTC (Mon) Contact: The Editor Home Page : Prophetic Midrash THE PHARAOHS OF EGYPT ... SESOSTRIS I (1962 BC to 1927 BC) sole rule as king of Egypt begins in 1962 BC. (The name "Ses ostris" is derived from "Senwosret". Note the similarity of name "Senwosret", and the name "O swiris" the King of Egypt as recorded in the Book of Jasher at the time that Abram went int o Egypt, according to this chronology about 1977 BC.) During his reign he brought Egypt t o a peak of internal and external prosperity. During the previous co-regency ten years with h is father Amenemhet, Sesostris assumed the more rigorous duties of rule. While his father com pleted his domestic reforms, Sesostris undertook the conquest of Nubia, the land immediatel y south of Egypt. Once securely in power, Sesostris continued the conquest of Nubia. Eventual ly, he thoroughly subjugated Nubia, and established forts with garrisons at strategic points . The border was established at Buhen, at the Second Nile Cataract, where a strong fortress w as erected. The governor of Elephantine, the king's own appointee, became responsible for th e new territory. After the war the exploitation of Nubia's resources began. Gold, copper, ame thysts and diorite were extracted at several sites, and inscriptions by the leaders of expedi tions and inspectors attest much activity. The post at Kerma continued to trade with inner Af rica, and a noble from Middle Egypt was probably placed in charge of its operations. Within E gypt, Sesostris worked the granite quarries at Aswan and gold mines and quarries in the Wad i Hammamat, east of Coptos in Upper Egypt, while he pursued an active building programme. Nine years after Sesostris I's sole rule began, in 1953 BC, God made His Covenant with AbraHA m. Abraham's first son, Ishmael was aged 13, and Abraham visited the land of the Philistines . He went via Sodom and Egypt, and Sodom was destroyed at that time. God changed Sarai's nam e to Sarah. A year later, in 1952 BC in the land of the Philistines, Isaac was born to Abra m (aged 100) and Sarah. About 1950 BC, Isaac was weaned; at a celebration feast, Isaac's 15 o r 16 year old brother (who was born of Sarah's Egyptian handmaid, Hagar), mocks Isaac, and he re begins a 400 year period of racial antagonism, affliction or mocking of the seed (or the p romise of the seed) by the Egyptians. Sesostris I built a major sanctuary at Heliopolis, near Cairo. At Thebes he built Karnak, whe re the cult and temple of Amon began to flourish. Sesostris also brought several of the weste rn oases under his jurisdiction, as is shown by messengers and police officials who travelle d there. With Palestine and Syria, Sesostris maintained peaceful relations. As shown by The S tory of Sinuhe, the king had no desire to acquire territory in Asia, although his emissarie s traversed its lands and sought to exert diplomatic pressures. (http://www.hooper-home.net/CHRONO/Pharaohs.html) Sesostris I (Kheperkare) 1971 - 1926 12th Dynasty Orginally came to power when he his father, Amenemhet I, took him as co-regent in Year 20 o f his reign. Sesostris I took major campaigns in Syria, Nubia and Libya. it was while he wa s away from Egypt campaigning in Libya that news reached him that his father had been assassi nated (these events are related in the 'Story of Sinuhe' and 'The Instruction of King Amenemh et I for his Sesostris'). Sesostris I then continued as sole king of Egypt, he increased the power of the monarchy an d increased Egypt's influence abroad using diplomacy when dealing with Palestine and Syri a - (although he did send some military expeditions against the Libyans) . In Year 18 Sesostr is I started a campaign against the Nubians in an effort to conquer and occupy lower Nubi a - upto and including the Third Cataract (and so were able to receive more gold, copper, dio rite, granite and amethyst). Domestic life in Egypt was helped by Sesostris' firm government which gave stability to th e country - Egypt was prosperous. Buildings of Sesostris I Sesostris was a prolific builder - although very little remains survive to present day. In Ye ar 3 he rebuilt the temple to Re-Atum at Heliopolis (where he also appears to have performe d some of the re-foundation ceremonies). In Year 30 he again built at Heliopolis, this time h e erected two 66ft red granite obelisks to celebrate his sed-festival - unfortunately all tha t remains from the entire temple site is a single obelisk. Co-Regency Sesostris I continued the policy first started by his father of naming his heir as co-regent : he took his son, Amenemhet II, as co-ruler at least 3 years before his death. Even in the 12th Dynasty, Sesostris I had a divine cult - later legends would refer to him a s 'Pharaoh Sesostris' who would do amazing deeds (however this 'Sesostris' was a combinatio n of Sesostris I, Sesostris III and Ramesses II). When he died, Sesostris I was buried in his pyramid at Lisht (a mile south from his father' s pyramid) - this pyramid is the best preserved from the 12th Dynasty, and it revived the lay out of the Old kingdom pyramid complexes. The Pyramid of Sesostris I Original Height - 61m Length of Side 105m Also known as the 'South Lisht Pyramid'. It was first discovered in 1882 by Gaston Maspero an d excavated by J.E. Galtier and Gustave Jequier in 1894. The pyramid was built by using grea t blocks of limestone based on a central nucleus, spaces were filled with unfired bricks - th e whole structure was then covered with slabs of Tura limestone. Inside the enclosure wall of the pyramid were a further ten satellite pyramids which were fou nd to have belonged to members of the royal family (these included Queen Nefru - slightly lar ger than the others - , and the princesses: Itekuyet , Nefru-sobek, Nefru-Ptah, Nenseddjedet ) and dignitaries. Several Mastabas were also found close to the pyramid - one of the most im portant being that of Senusretankh (a High Priest of Ptah) whose funerary chamber was decorat ed with Pyramid Texts. (http://members.tripod.com/~ib205/sesostris_1.html) Senusret I, 2nd King of the 12th Dynasty by Jimmy Dunn Senusret I was the second king of the 12th Dynasty and ascended to the throne after the murde r of his father, Amenemhet I. There had apparently been a harem plot, and with good timing, A menemhet I was assassinated in the absence of his son, who was fighting in Libya. It would se em that his son either swiftly left the campaign, or was already heading home at the time o f the murder. However, this was not the first harem conspiracy, and Amenemhet I had performe d his due diligence in respect to assuring a successful transition for his heir. For the fir st time that we know of in Egyptian history, Senusret I was made a co-regent in the 20th yea r of Amenemhet I's rule, and so was by the time of his father's death firmly established as t he heir to the throne. Therefore, regardless of the intentions of the conspirators, he manag ed to ascend the throne with little difficulty. Senusret I was this king's birth name, and means "Man of goddess Wosret". However, it was als o the name, we believe, of his non-royal grandfather and so it may give little insight into h is character. In references, he is also sometimes called Senwosret I, or Sesostris I (Greek) . His throne name was Kheper-ka-re, which means, "The Soul of Re comes into Being". His mothe r was probably Neferytotenen (Nefrutoteen, Nefrytatenen), one of Amenemhet I's chief wives. H e married a Queen Nefru, who was the mother of his successor son, Amenemhet II. Like his fath er, Amenemhet II was also made a coregent, but only perhaps three years prior to Senusret I' s death. The coregency was recorded by a private stele of Simontu that is now in the Britis h Museum. From her pyramid near her father's we also know that he had a daughter (or possibl y a wife) by the name of Itakaiet. He may have had other daughters, including princesses Nefr u-Sobek, Nefru-Ptah and Nenseddjedet. Senusret I probably ruled Egypt for a period of about 34 years after his father's death durin g a period in Egypt's history where literature and craftsmanship was at its peek. We believ e he may have been a co-regent of his father far perhaps another ten years. He probably rule d Egypt from about 1956 through 1911 BC. It was a period of affluence, and a remarkable time for mineral wealth, gold and the fine jew elry produced with this abundance. Jewelry masterpieces have been found, particularly in th e tombs of the royal ladies at Dahshur and Lahun, attributable to his reign. Considerable eff orts were made to procure amethyst, turquoise, copper and gniess for both jewelry and sculptu res. But it was also a time of great stability and development. However, we also learn from letters of an old farmer named Hekanakhte to his family, that the re was apparently a famine during the time of Senusret, a fact that is also implied by an ins cription in the tomb of a nomarch (governor) named Amenemhat at Beni Hassan. But along with t his news, we also are provided considerable insight into the life of the common Egyptians o f this period by Hekanakhte's letters, and a better understanding of the details of agricultu ral. He continued many of his father's policies, including the expansion in northern Nubia. We kno w that he sent one expedition to Nubia in his tenth year of reign, and that eight years later , he sent another army as far south as the second cataract. His general, Mentuhotep, went eve n deeper into Nubia. However, Senusret I established Egypt's southern border at the fortres s of Buhen near the second cataract, where he placed a garrison and a victory stele, thereb y adding to the already substantial military presence established by his father. Now, there w ere at least 13 fortresses that extended as far as the Second Cataract, and while Egypt's bor der may have been at the Nile's second cataract, he exercised control of Nubia as far as th e Third Cataract. Inscriptions attributable to Senusret I can be found as far south as the is land of Argo, north of modern Dongola. He also protected the Delta region and the Western desert Oases from Libyan invasion by mean s of a series of military campaigns and by establishing control over oases in the Libyan Dese rt. Several of the expeditions also appear to have been lead by him personally. However, he radically changed the policy towards Syria/Palestine by seeking stable commercia l and diplomatic relations rather then a policy of expansion and control. Trading caravans pa ssed between Syria and Egypt exchanging cedar and ivory for Egyptian goods. Religiously, Senusret contributed considerable attention to the cult of Osiris, and over hi s long rule, this deity's beliefs and practices flourished in Egypt. Osiris was a god of th e people and in expanding this cult, Senusret I gave his subjects what John Wilson has descri bed as the "democratization of the afterlife". Senusret I had already established himself as a builder during the co-regency with his fathe r by extending and and embellishing some major temples, particularly at Karnak, where he is c onsidered to have founded the temple of Ipet sut (Karnak), and Heliopolis. As early as year t wo of his reign, he rebuilt the very important temple of Re-Atum at Heliopolis, a center of t he sun cult. He probably even personally participated in the foundation ceremonies for the te mple's reconstruction. He also had two, massive 20 meter (66 foot) red granite obelisks erect ed at the same temple on the occasion of his jubilee celebrating his 30th year in office. The se monoliths would have weighed 121 tons each. One of the pair remains the oldest standing ob elisk in Egypt. He also built the famous bark shrine, or White Chapel, that has been reconstr ucted by Henri Chevrier in the Open Air Museum at Karnak. It was built in order to celebrat e his sed festival (Jubilee) in the 30th year of his reign, but the blocks for the temple wer e reused to build the third Pylon at Karnak. A scene within the White Chapel records the coro nation of Senusret I, and is the oldest such scene so far discovered. The more important projects included remodeling the temple of Khenti-amentiu-Osiris at Abydos . He also erected many memorial stele and small shrines, or cenotaphs, at Abydos, a practic e that would be followed by many Middle and New Kingdom pharaohs. We also find temples buil t by Sunusret I at Elepantine and Tod. In fact, he is attested to at almost three dozen site s from Alexandria to Aswan and down into Nubia where he carried out building projects. Senusret I also set up a program to build monuments in each of the main cult sites all over E gypt. This was really an extension of an Old Kingdom policy, but in reality he was followin g his fathers efforts to consolidate and centralize power. This move undermined the power ba ses of local temples and priests.
