Notes:

1 NAME Ali Ibn Abu TALIB Caliph in /Iraq/ 1 NAME 'Ali Ibn Abu TALIB Caliph in /Iraq/ Son-in-law of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, and fourth caliph (successor to Muhammad), reig ning from 656 to 661. The question of his right to the caliphate resulted in the only major s plit in Islam (into Sunnah and Shi'ah branches). He is revered by the Shi'ah as the only tru e successor to the Prophet. 'Ali was the son of Abu Talib, chief of a local clan. When his fa ther became impoverished, 'Ali was taken under the care of Muhammad, then still a businessma n in Mecca, who himself had been cared for by 'Ali's father as a child. . When Muhammad felt God's call to become his prophet, 'Ali, though only 10 years old, became o ne of the first converts to Islam and remained a life long devoted follower of Muhammad. Acco rding to legend 'Ali risked his life by sleeping in the Prophet's bed to impersonate him th e night that Muhammad fled in 622 from Mecca to Medina from enemies who were plotting to assa ssinate him. In addition, 'Ali is said to have carried out Muhammad's request to restore al l the properties that had been entrusted to him as a merchant to their owners in Mecca. . Only then did 'Ali himself leave for Medina. There he married Muhammad's daughter Fatima, wh o bore him two sons, Hassan and Hussein. . 'Ali is said to have displayed rare courage in battle during the military expeditions Muhamma d conducted to consolidate Islam and always obtained a lion's share of the booty. 'Ali was al so one of Muhammad's scribes and was chosen to lead several important missions. When the host ile inhabitants of Mecca finally accepted Islam without battle, it was 'Ali who smashed the p agan idols in the Ka'bah (holy shrine). . Muhammad died on June 8, 632. Some say he had unequivocally nominated 'Ali as his successor w hile he was returning from his "farewell pilgrimage" to Mecca. Others reject this claim, main taining that Muhammad died without naming a successor. 'Ali, while attending the last rites o fthe Prophet, was confronted by the fact that Abu Bakr, Muhammad's closest friend and fathe r of 'A'ishah, one of the Prophet's wives, had been chosen caliph. 'Ali did not submit to Ab u Bakr's authority for some time, but neither did he actively assert his own rights, possibl y because he did not want to throw the Muslim community into bloody tribal strife. He retire d into a quiet life in which religious works became his chief occupation. . The first chronologically arranged version of the Qur'an is attributed to him, and his excell ent knowledge of the Qur'an and Hadith (the sayingsand deeds of Muhammad) aided the caliphs i n various legal problems. . Following the murder of 'Uthman, the third caliph, 'Ali was invited bythe Muslims of Medina t o accept the caliphate; reluctant, he agreed only after long hesitation. His brief reign wa s beset by difficulties due mostly to the corrupt state of affairs he inherited. Acutely awar e of the neglect of the Qur'an and the traditions of Muhammad that his predecessors had allow ed to develop, he based his rule on the Islamic ideals of social justice and equality. His po licy was a blow to the interests of the Quraysh aristocracy of Mecca who had grown rich in th ewake of the Muslim conquests. In order to embarrass 'Ali they demanded that he bring the mur derers of 'Uthman to trial, and when he rejected their request, a rebellion against him was i nstigated in which two prominent Meccans along with 'A'ishah, Muhammad's widow and the daught er of Abu Bakr, the first caliph, took a leading part. This rebellion, known as the Battle o f the Camel (the camel ridden by 'A'ishah), was quelled. . A second rebellion was on the point of being crushed when its leader,Mu'awiyah, a kinsman o f 'Uthman and the governor of Syria, averted defeatby proposing arbitration. 'Ali saw throug h the stratagem but was forcedby his army to accept adjudication, which greatly weakened hi s position. Soon, moreover, he had to fight some of the very people who had earlier forced hi m to accept arbitration but now denounced it. Known as Khawarij (Seceders), they were defeate d by Ali in the Battle of Nahrawan. . Meanwhile, Mu'awiyah followed an aggressive policy, and by the end of 660 'Ali had lost contr ol of Egypt and of the Hejaz. While praying in a mosque at Kufah in Iraq, 'Ali was struck wit h a poisoned sword by a Kharijite, intent on avenging the men slain at Nahrawan. Two days lat er 'Ali died and was buried near Kufah. . 'Ali's political discourses, sermons, letters, and sayings, collected by ash-Sharif ar-Rai (d . 1015) in a book entitled Nahj al-balaghah ("TheRoad of Eloquence") with commentary by Ibn A bi al-Hadid (d. 1258), are well known in Arabic literature. 10 May 2003

Notes:

Genesis 25:12-16 . The tribe of Adbeel is often identified with the people of Idibi'ilu of the land of Arubu, wh o became subjects to Tiglath Pileser II (744 - 727 BC). This Idibi'ilu was given the duty a s the Assyrian king's agent on the boarders of Egypt. His tribe was said to have dwelt far aw ay, towards the west. From this reference, some historians have thought that the tribe of Adb eel lived in the Sinai.

Notes:

Genesis 25:12-16 . Dumah is mentioned in the Biblical records as a city in Canaan (Joshua 15:52) It is also asso ciated with Edom and Seir in Isaiah 21:11 . Dumah is generally identified by historians with the Addyrian Adummatu people. Esarhaddon rel ated how, in his attempt to subdue the Arabs, his father, Sennacherib struck against their ca pital, Adummatu, which he called the stronghold of the Arabs. Sennacherib captured their king , Haza'il, who is called, King of the Arabs. Kaza'il is also referred to in one inscription o f Ashurbanipal as King of the Kedarites. . From a geographical standpoint, Adummatu is often associated with the medieval Arabic Dumat e l-Jandal, which was in ancient times a very important and strategic junction on the major tra de route between Syria, Babylon, Najd and the Hijaz area. Dumat el Jandal is at the southeast ern end of Al Jawf, which is a desert basin, and often denotes the whole lower region of Wad i as Sirhan, the famous depression situated half way between Syria and Mesopotamia. This are a has water, and was a stopping place for caravan traders coming from Tayma, before proceedin g on to Syria or Babylonia. . This strategic location effectively made Dumah the entrance to north Arabia. This oasis was t he center of rule for many north Arabian kings and queens, as related to us in Assyrian recor ds.

Notes:

Genesis 25:12-16 . The records of Tiglath Pileser III mentions the inhabitants of Mas'a and of Tema, who paid hi m tribute. On the summit of Jebal Ghunaym, located about fourteen kilometers south of Tayma , archeologists Winnett and Reed discovered some graffiti texts mentioning the tribe Massaa , in connection with Dedan and Nebayot. These texts refer to the war against Dedan, the war a gainst Nabayat and the war against Massaa. Therefore, these tribes appear to have been clos e to each other at this time. The tribe of Massaa is possibly connected with the Masanoi of N orth Arabia as mentioned by Ptolemy, Geography v18, 2. . Those holding to the theory that the Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea into Arabia prope r, identify El Maser as the place where the Israelites murmured. (Exodus 17:7, Deut 6:16,9:22 ,33:8)
