Letter to Ruthanne Haight about the Haight-Wing Cemtery new owners: FW: Haight-Wing Family Cemetery scotanglocelt 5:19 PM (4 hours ago) Forwarded to John Hoyt From: Pam Matia Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2020 4:54 PM To: scotanglocelt Subject: Re: Haight-Wing Family Cemetery Mrs. Haight Thank you for your reply. We're so sorry for your loss. This summer, we purchased the home and property where the Haight/Wing family cemetery resides. We were originally looking for someone in the family to give us permission to trim a couple of dead branches out of the trees on the cemetery land, hoping to avoid one of them falling and either knocking over a headstone or injuring someone. Not having heard from anyone in the family by the time our tree trimmers arrived to do the other work we had hired them to do on our property, we asked them to remove the dead branches from the cemetery property, too. We didn't want to do anything against the family's wishes, but wanted to make sure the cemetery land is a safe place for the family to visit if they wish. With your permission, we will continue to maintain the cemetery land, keeping the yard trimmed and picking up sticks and trash, etc. (You'd be surprised at how much trash is thrown into that cemetery by passers-by on Route 36!) By law, we're not permitted to do anything to the gravestones, not even attempt to repair them if they are knocked over, since they belong to the family and not to us. We have been doing some preliminary research on the people who are buried there, but it's hard to read some of the stones, and I haven't been able to find much online. It looks like a new gravestone was placed for Benjamin Haight in the past few years, and I'm told someone from the family comes by around Memorial Day to place a flag. We would love to know more about the people who are buried in the cemetery. We promise to take good care of the cemetery property as long as we live here. Please let us know if there is anything you want us to do to make family members more comfortable when they visit. We had thought about placing a bench, but again, are not permitted to do anything to that piece of property without family permission. I'm in charge of placing Memorial Day flowers at our family plot, and would be happy to place flowers for your family as well, if you wish. I look forward to hearing from you. Our branch of the Haight (Hoyt) family can be traced back to Adam and Eve. Hope to hear from you.
