Hugh Percival Hoyt, b. November 27, 1872, of George G. & Elizabeth Adellia (Gerould) Hoyt in Muir-Lyons, Ionia Co., Michigan. He grew up in several towns, besides Muir-Lyons, and then moviong to Saline, MI, (where his older brother G. Marcus graduated from H.S.), with his family, then to Stanton, Ionia Co., MI, where his Father owned the Statom Roller Mill. Hugh P.graduated from Stanton High School. (see image of post card of his school below). Hugh P. went on to Cleary Business College where he graduated with a business degree in 1893. (See below C.B.C. Graduates Photo in B & W). He came back to work & live in Stanton, MI, then, Remus, MI, along with his parents when he met and married Katherine E. Hoag, from nearby Colby, MI, a teacher, formerly of Saginaw, MI.(View tin-type of Katherine E. Hoag at College in Wilmington NC below). After marrying, Hugh P. worked with his Father, Geroge G. Hoyt, and Uncle Earnest Edward Hoyt, in the Stanton Roller Flour/Feed Mill in Stanton, Mi, until it burned down in 1895, then George G. got another mill in Remus, MI. (View image of Remus Grist Mill below), Hugh P. then moved to Deerfield, MI to operate a Grist Mill, and then coming to Tecumseh MI, to the Hayden Flour Mill in 1906. After about 4-5 years. Hugh P. operated the Atlas Mill in Clinton, MI, and then purchased it in 1924, and named it, Atlas Milling Company. During the depression, Hugh P. Hoyt was running the mill in the black, and had expanded the Mill in 1930's with a Storage Depot in Jackson, MI. His brother, Earnest Edward Hoyt, who lived across the street from the Atlas Mill, died from an accident at the Mill in 12 Feb.1952. In 1955, the Atlas Milling Co. was sold and became the Atlas Feed & Grain. Hugh P. Hoyt was civic minded, as his son, Paul. He held positions for many years on the Village Council for the Village of Clinton, and was Village President, from 1953-54. Hugh P.was also on the local school board. Hugh P. & Kittie Hoyt were devote Christians & involved in many positions at the First Congregational Church, across the street from them, and there other relatives. Hugh died at the Medical Center Hospital in Eustus, Lake Co., FL. of a heart attack, he previously had Diabetes, Type 1, and Kittie (Katherine E.) (Hoag) Hoyt died 10 Jun 1958 at Herrick Mem. Kittie was involved with the Eastern Star and Church & Communittee activities, and took in immigrants, (one being of German descent), for help in the household, whom still lives in Clinton, MI, as of 2000 --jeh. |
