McLeester PO Box 216 Spokane, MO 65754 417-443-0853 Note: Tavern keeper, cartridges were made in the tavern during Revolution. Gen. Tryon's troops fired several cannon balls into the tavern. Birth could be at Ridgefield. From Ridgefield Bicentennial, 1908, p. 87. The Episcopal Church was used for storage of supplies during the Revolution, and was fired upon by General Tryon in addition six dwellings, among these houses, the Keeler Tavern, kept by Timothy Keeler, Patriot. The English heard that cartridges were being made in the Tavern and discharged several cannon balls into the house, one of which is still plainly visible, dislodging the enemy who took refuge in the woods. Mr. Keeler's neighbor, a royalist, who, finding the sparks a menace to his own house, received Gen. Tryon's permission to quench the flames. When Mr. Keeler returned from his hiding place the Tory met him saying, "You may thank me that your house is safe". "No sir

" roared the sturdy patriot, "I will not thank a Tory for anything. I thank the Lord for the north wind". By 1944 the Keeler tavern had been razed. Timothy Keeler represented Ridgefield in the legislature in 1763, 1778, 1780, and 1781. List from D.W. Teller's History of Ridgefield, 1878. Named to Committee of Inspections, 26 members, by town meeting of 17 Dec 1775 that voted to support Continental Congress. Was moderator at meeting of 4 Apr 1777 and chosen for Committee of Safety. Also moderator at meeting of 23 Aug 1780, tax on list of 1779 to pay soldiers, on committee to write memorial to legislature for raising soldiers. The name of his Tory neighbor was Hoyt so he may have been a brother-in-law or other relative of his wife, Mary Hoyt. He was also known as Squire Keeler. Source: History of the Firelands, W.W. Williams, 1879, Leader Printing Co., Cleveland. On account of the damages from Tryon's raid, Timothy Keeler, 2nd, was granted £51-9s-0d worth of land in Section 1, Ridgefield Twp, Huron Co., OH. This was sold to Phillip B. Bradley. Many men of note stopped at the Keeler Tavern. Oliver Wolcott, Sec. Treasury in Washington's cabinet; Lt. Gov. John Treadwell; Timothy Pickering, Postmaster General in Washington's cabinet; Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, in 1804. 1790 U.S. Census has 3 white males 16 and up and 2 white females.

DEATH: Deacon / Luiet. David Hoyt, Third Generation, from Simon, HHH Book, "2618", (Indian Captive & death by starvation and heavy loads on March to Canada by Indians from attack on Deerfield, CT in 1704-5); from HHH book, pg. 316. FULL STORY OF HOYT's & OTHER SETTLER SURVIVAL in:"Brief Sketch of the First Settlement of Deerfield, Mass., 1833, by Epaphras Hoyt, (1765-1850)", 20 pages. Attributed to Elihu Hoyt, owner of the Indian House, Deerfield, MA. URL link & Download & Viewing is located online at Story #4 at: http://www.johnhoyt.com/hoyt-stories.html http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.hoyt&m=935 John E. Hoyt recieved this "Breief Sketch....", in am email from Sue, , on 08-20-2005. =============================================== DEATH: Father, Nicholas Hayte, died aged 33 years. His wife died 4 days prior, so we surmise, it might be a disease that befell them both, but the 4 children survived. Samuel, the eldest son is talked of getting his one third, the house and the land, and selling it, and removing to East Chester, CT. The next son, Jonathan shows up in Guilford, CT from Windsor, CT., while last son David shows up moving to Hatley/Hatfield, Mass. to Deerfield, Mass. ===========Changed Epaphras to Elihu=========== John, RE: Brief Sketch of Deerfield I've just been informed tht the author definitely is Elihu Hoyt, not his older brother Ephaphras. I would respectfully like to request you make the change on the website below. If you have any problem, contact me and I will send you a new copy. My applogies for the error. http://www.johnhoyt.com/hoyt-stories.html #4 Thanks, Sue ==================Email on travel to Ridgefield CT===== Don & Cherry Henrick's, dau. to Patricia Isadore Hoyt John, Thanks for the info about George Greenwood Hoyt. Yes, Daniel and Joanna Olmstead were cousins. Cherry and I just returned from an interesting visit to Deerfield, MA and Ridgefield, CT. If you already don't know, Historic Deerfield, is a recreation of the town as it was rebuilt after the Deerfield raid in 1704. It commemorates all the families that were killed or captured by the French and Indians in that raid. There is a marble plaque on the wall in the museum to David Hoyt , his wife Abigail, and children that were taken captive. They were marched to Canada and David and his youngest daughter were killed along the way. There is a Deerfield Descendents organization that you can join if you're interested. You can find them on the internet. In Ridgefield, we visited Keeler's Tavern Museum, a Ridgefield historic landmark. It began as a farmhouse constructed by Benjamin Hoyt, son of David Hoyt of Deerfield. The house was begun in 1713 and has been added on to by Benjamin and others over the years. The museum is being maintained by a Keeler Tavern Museum Preservation Society. The tavern is in remarkable condition. You might try looking that up on the internet also. I found an article in a newspaper about the history of Ridgefield. It said that the Hoyt Family constructed a mill in the mid-1700's. That may be where they learned the trade. There is a lot of Hoyt history in MA and CT. It made for an interesting fall trip. Don

Percival, I don’t know about his training as a minister. My father said he was a “Scotch Presbyterian minister” and that he opened up new churches in Eastern Washington, as somewhat of a missionary. This was probably later in life since there is earlier evidence of other occupations. John T. wrote extensive diaries and we have some boxes that may contain more information. We may not get to that for awhile because we are currently researching Daniel A. Cartano’s family (Dad’s father’s side). I will let you know if I get any more facts on John T. Margaret Hewes Email Source: A short take on Jonathan Percival from current Cartano's From: David Lynch Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2007 10:34 AM To: rourke Subject: Johnathan Percival Dear Julie, Martha forwarded you e-mail to me and I am not able to be as exact as I would like to be about this data. BUT.............. Jonathan Percival was born in Lanarkshire [he was a "Lowlander"] Scotland who emigrated to the US before his marriage to Emily Hoyt in Muir, Ionia County, Michigan. They may have been married in the Muir Presbyterian Church, BUT he was a conservaive [almost "primitive" puritanical] Calvinist who disliked the overly "modern" Presyterian Church of Scotland, and he was actually a minister in the Congregational Church. My guess is that this more loosely-organised group would permit his brand of Christianity without too much objection. Remember we are talking about these Churches as they existed 150 years ago and the theological lines have weakened since then. He was a telegrapher at Muir, so in some ways he was quite modern

As I sit here at my computer I would be hard pressed to document this, but a more thorough search of my materials would make that possible, and I will try to get them in order for you. We have a xeroxed copy of his hand-written autobiography and that will take a bit of doing to read - it is old fashioned script and not as sharp a copy as one might wish it to be. As I recall there were two very distinct on"takes' on the man. Your Dad thought very highly of him and when he and I talked about Jonathan, Uncle John's memories were warm and respectful, almost venerating. But my Mother-in-Law, Margaret Carolyn Cartano Fletcher had a vastly different impression of her grandfather: a mean, dominating, vengeful and harsh man who would not allow her to so much as bounce a ball on Sunday [which he took to be the sabbath]. The circumstances surrounding the marriage of Jonathn and Emily ["how do I know that he is not a criminal"] seem to me that Margaret Fletcher may have had a clearer view of the man. But then, that could be my own prejudice about Calvinist puritansshowing up. He certainly soured her on Christianity and religion in general. I will try to find more about these folk. But it may take some time. You are to be congratulated for undertaking this kind of research: it does not take very long for all of this to be lost. Your affectionate Cousin-by-marriage, Chuck Lynch BURIAL: Source: ----- Original Message ----- From: Cilla Carpenter To: John Hoyt Sent: Friday, August 10, 2007 1:51 PM Subject: Surprise Dear John: Tiz 10:30 here. SOURCE: The Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, & Hight Families, by David W. Hoyt, Provident Press Company, 1871., Page 329, Luient. Benjamin Hayt, Hoyt, tells of different villages of land deeds, and the Deerfield Indian Massacure, Norwalk, CT, Ridgefield, CT, Lewisboro, NY and Pound Ridge, NY. I have not been successful at finding, "Ensign or Luiet.", and his families place of burial. jeh. His son, Benjamin, b. 1721, is buried at the Old Ridgefield Cemetery, ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT. Source #1: Ridgefield CT Keeler Tavern History http://www.elmsinn.com/links.htm The Keeler Tavern Museum (Built 1713 by Benjamin Hoyt): The tavern that played a role in the Battle of Ridgefield in 1777 and still bears the scar of a cannon ball in its corner post. Restored rooms furnished in Colonial style with volunteers attired for the period. Shop and Gardens. 132 Main Street, Ridgefield. 203-438-5485. On a trip to Ridgefild, CT Don & Cherry Henrick; John, Thanks for the info about George Greenwood Hoyt.
